On May 28, 1863, the largest crowd in Boston's history assembled to send off the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment to fight in the Civil War. Many onlookers had purchased a souvenir of the day containing a quote from the English poet Lord Byron:
What's impressive about this memorial is the optical illusion involved. The memorial looks like there's maybe 4 or 5 soldiers at first, but at closer look (and closer photo), you can see the statue actually has every member of the 54th Volunteer Infantry Regiment in it.
